Sharon Stallings (formerly Sharon Wilfong) has been making art for more than fifty years.
Welcome!Welcome!
I painted long before I had the words to describe what I was seeing. Looking back, I think brushwork and color became my first language. For more than fifty years, I've explored the world through layers of paint, texture, color, and pattern. Whether I'm creating mixed-media paintings, gelli prints, collage, or small studies, each piece begins with curiosity. I notice something. A relationship. A rhythm. A memory. Then my intuition kicks in, and I follow it.
My work is rooted in process. I don't think of art as illustrating ideas. I think of it as a way of understanding them. Nature, folklore, history, technology, and everyday life all find their way into my work because I don't see them as separate subjects. I'm interested in the patterns that connect them and in the quiet moments when something familiar begins to reveal a deeper meaning. Layers, partially removed and rediscovered, reveal earlier marks that often remain visible beneath the finished surface. It is all a part of the story. Every painting carries the memory of its own making.
Over the years, I've come to believe that creativity grows through observation, experimentation, revision, and the willingness to remain curious. I hope my work invites you to slow down, look a little longer, and discover something you didn't notice at first glance. Because sometimes the most meaningful things reveal themselves one layer at a time.
